A well planned and thought out Safari is usually an experience you will never forget, Africa has some the the world finest nature reserves and you wont likely find anywhere else in the world better for wildlife spotting. Here are some tips to ensure you get the most from your African Safari.

Gorilla Tracking & Permits.
Each Safari park has a limited number of gorilla permits each season, so you must obtain your Gorilla permit when booking your Safari. Remember when viewing Gorillas you will have to be over 15 & illness free, also you are not permitted to use flash in your camera. You will not be allowed closer than 5 metres (minimum) to the gorilla this is because human disease can be passed to the Gorilla and cause death.

Health issues:
Before leaving for your trip to Africa it would be wise to consult a doctor, this will put your mind at rest, You may have to get one or more Vaccines this will most likely be Malaria and possibly Yellow fever. AIDS is also a massive issue in Africa however Aids can only be transferred through the exchange of bodily fluids therefore if you are sensible and take precautions like you would back home there should not be any problems.

Currency:
It is not wise to arrive in Africa with large amounts of local Currency, you should take smaller Travellers cheque which can be cashed when needed & cancelled and reissued if lost or stolen. There are usually ATM’s in towns & cities however do not count it as there may not be one nearby. Also tipping can be done in local currency or on American dollars, this is entirely upto you.

Packing & Preparation:
you should always ask your tour operator if there are any restrictions on luggage, it would be advisable to travel with soft & compact luggage, laundry is performed daily in lodges so you dont have to carry about umpteen pairs of clothes. Africa is a warm place with lots of sun so it is wise to pack a pair of sunglasses & head protection & lots of suncream and block. Insect repellent would also be a wise idea as mosquito’s can be very common.

It may sound like a simple thing but there are many different kinds of African Safari’s, so before you choose one be sure to check what kind of safari it is, Here are the different types of African safari’s you can get:

Walking Safari’s
This usually involves walking through game rich areas, with an armed, qualified & professional guide(s). these types of safari’s usually involve using temporary bush camps or if you are lucky there are sometimes permanent residences used as a base camp and you can use different methods of transport to get to what you wish to see. You can do walking safari’s in luxury or simply get back to the basics, however the main thing to ensure is that you get a great guide.

Mobile Safari’s
These safari’s make use of 4×4 vehicles, these are usually single trips in which you will cover a large area & a variety of different habitats. If you have a good guide you will also spend some of the more interesting times on foot where you will explore some of the best areas. Mobile safari’s offer a great deal of flexibility.

Wing Safaris
These are especially handy for those with a shortage of time, usually the pilot doubles up as a guide and will stop off at the most prominent parts. These safaris are usually more expensive and can last for 6-7 days.

Self Drive Safaris
Probably the most flexible kind of safari as you hire a car, plan your own destinations & book your own accommodation.
